At NAMI GMV, we understand the priorities of our families in West Liberty, Muscatine, and beyond. We know that basic needs such as feeding and educating our children come first in our lives. But we also recognize that to take good care of them, we must first take care of ourselves. Here, we want to talk about something equally important: our mental health.
Life presents us with challenges, especially in these times. The pandemic, economic pressures, and the social environment can overwhelm us. We want you to know that seeking help is not only brave but an act of love towards yourself and your family.
Sharing our struggles may seem like a sign of weakness, but it’s quite the opposite. It’s finding strength in our vulnerability. It’s a step towards personal and family well-being. At NAMI GMV, we offer a safe space to start these tough conversations, supporting you every step of the way.
We offer workshops and resources that reflect our experiences and culture. You are not only invited, we want to know and help you.
The NAMI Family-to-Family program is a free, 8-session educational course for families, friends, and partners of adults with mental illness, offering vital information, coping strategies, and the chance for mutual support through shared experiences. It focuses on understanding mental health conditions, effective communication, crisis management, and the importance of caregiver self-care, all taught by NAMI-trained individuals with personal experience. The NAMI Family & Friends seminar is a 90-minute program designed to inform and support people who have loved ones with a mental health condition, providing key information on how to cope with crises, communicate effectively, and the critical role of family and friends in the recovery process. We can notify you of our next free Spanish-language seminar if you’ll provide your information here. LINK COMING.
This bilingual, culturally tailored program designed to promote mental wellness within the Hispanic/Latin American community, offering insights into mental health, treatment options, and the importance of cultural identity in the healing process. This series of presentations provides a safe space for discussion, aiming to reduce stigma and empower individuals through education and community support.
A workshop for young people, helping them to start conversations about mental health, reflect on their feelings, and connect with the necessary support for their healing journey.
Aimed at community leaders and adults, this workshop encourages healthy dialogue about personal and community mental well-being, incorporating our healthy cultural practices.
For families, this workshop emphasizes empathic and compassionate communication, recognizing the importance of mental health in family well-being.
We invite everyone to be part of these private conversations. Whether by participating in our workshops, sharing your stories, or simply listening, every action counts. Together, we can create a future where mental well-being is as much a priority as feeding and educating our children. Where generational trauma is healed together – without damage to your extended family members – so that future generations can thrive. Where you are still able to perform your work while healing.
There is nothing to fear here. Never forget that mental health is health and you deserve a healthy body, mind, and spirit.
At NAMI GMV, we believe hope is shared. By opening our hearts and minds, by sharing our struggles and victories, we strengthen our community. Remember, seeking help is an act of bravery and you don’t have to do it alone.
